For the love of sending Valentines

You don't have to have a ring on your finger to fete amore on Valentine’s Day. Regardless of the status box you “x” when filling out official paperwork, this lovely day, though sometimes cliché, is one that can and should be celebrated by all ~ friends, family, lovers, pets, restaurants, resorts, etc.

One of my favorite ways to celebrate? Sending paper Valentines.

In addition to supplies, inspiration is essential. You can find it online (http://www.bhg.com/holidays/valentines-day/cards/easy-to-make-valentines-day-cards/?page=1), in a magazine’s pages, in a delicious cup of coffee, or in the name of a cheesy 1980's TV show, "The Love Boat."

In the next day or two, my paper love boats will be launching an expedition from Arizona to Iowa via USPS. Some of these boats are for sailing, some are for fishing – and all are made using whole pieces and random scraps of construction paper, morsels of Ecosaurus gift wrap, and choice cuts from old New Yorker magazines.

This week, feel the love's wind in your hair and celebrate love’s power by putting a card in the mail or placing one on a colleague’s desk. -A.F.

  1. My talented dog delivered some valentine's this year: a photo of him and his cute little golden retriever cousin touching muzzles, attached to a dog-shape cookie cutter with a ribbon. He's not very talented at InDesign, so he had to add his message to the photo with a labelmaker. But come on, he's only a dog. No opposable thumbs.
