While sustainability has come to be synonymous with planet-minded efforts, it doesn't have to be limited as such. Sustainability can also be considered in the context of other quality causes. Among the causes Paul Newman worked to sustain were hope and excellence through his charitable giving, picture-perfect performances and thoughtful lifestyle.
Paul Newman would have been 84 tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 26. He was and remains one of my favorite public figures -- not only for his incredible on-screen skills, but for his off-screen soul. No one thing defined him -- not being an actor, director, husband, father, entrepreneur, auto racer, humanitarian -- and yet he seemed to give himself wholly to everything he attempted. Paul Newman was a man who played many characters, but remained true to his idea of what having character meant. He was a man who had much, but who gave back much more to his family, his friends and strangers in need of a lift.
Paul Newman's spirit, now, that's something to sustain. So as we remember him on his birthday, let us work to sustain hope and excellence as he did at home, at work, in love, and in life.
