Giving a knit about the planet

Scottsdale's Jessica Knits is a wonderful little shop filled with beautiful yarns. Its inventory features some truly lovely naturally-dyed hemp and bamboo products that are the handiwork of fair trade communities in South America and around the world.

I love to knit and keep quite a bit of yarn around the house, some of which I like to repurpose for other projects such as gift-wrapping. Planet-friendly yarn is one possible guilt-free alternative to standard ribbons, whose manufacturing practices can be toxic. (We do advocate using and reusing any ribbons, however, that are already in circulation!) Accordingly, for a little Ecosaurus photo shoot, we decided to pair a red fair trade yarn with our recycled/recyclable gift wrap, using an old button to bind the ends together in a fun way (shown).
For yarn-lovers yearning to do more than expand their knitting supplies for the sakes of scarves and gifts, Jessica Knits also offers classes for all levels of knitting and crochet. Learn more here. Finally, the following Treehugger article offers additional insight into earth-lovin' yarns. ~J. S. + A.F.
